as a thief and glamorous patron of the art world You d think you could never understand how an understated girl from a small town could embezzle this amount of money But the author does a wonderful job of showing exactly how this happened, in a frighteningly seductive way, Though this book draws an obvious comparison to the Talented Mr Ripley, it sometimes reminded me a littleof the first part of Psycho only what if Marion Crane went back and forth between her office job and the glamorous escape she had tried to make, which was a success I found this book to be a whole lot of delicious fun and was surprised to learn it is based on a true story which I am now inclined to research If you have any interest in art, crime, or both, you will be sucked into this book..Thanks to Harper Collins, NetGalley and the Talented Emily Grey Tedrowe for the advanced copy of this lovely book which I savored like a fine piece of art [[ DOWNLOAD EPUB ]] ↿ The Talented Miss Farwell ☞ Catch Me If You Can It s told in timeline format from youth to Becky s mid 40 s As much as we learned about Becky, I still felt like we didn t get a great grasp of the character even at the end We knew her motives, but not truly what drove her I felt unsettled by the book itself This is a suspense mystery I won an ARC of this book from goodreads giveaway, and I will post a review as soon as I finish reading the book. I ve seen the mixed reviews on this one and it took me a few minutes to really consider my thoughts I read most of this book over a weekend Any book that can keep me to where I make time to read just onechapter , I have to likethan just a little I could see where Becky was going with her flawed plan but kept hoping there would be a point where she would come to her senses I did enjoy how the author gave us a glimpse into the mind of a compulsive gamblerjust onehand, jus I ve seen the mixed reviews on this one and it took me a few minutes to really consider my thoughts I read most of this book over a weekend Any book that can keep me to where I make time to read just onechapter , I have to likethan just a little I could see where Becky was going with her flawed plan but kept hoping there would be a point where she would come to her senses I did enjoy how the author gave us a glimpse into the mind of a compulsive gamblerjust onehand, just onetimeand then I ll have enough My fave line from the book What was it like to have just your one regular life and to be content She was almost forty seven years old and she had so much and it was never enough Pretty profound The ending was the bummer for me I loved Beckys friendship with Ingrid from the beginning and really hoped for arewarding closure for those two To avoid spoilers, I won t say much other than to say the ending was my least favorite part of the whole book So for the ending, this one ends up with a 3.5 for me and not a full 4 Otherwise, an enjoyable read that I could definitely see make it to a screen Interesting. Becky Farwell responds to her tragic young life full of limitations by turning her talent for math and problem solving into a new activity at which she can prosper. While I had empathy for her and her life choices this book was so brilliantly written that I just had anxiety throughout I was never sure whether I was supposed to admire her or just be disgusted. Poor Becky Farwell Growing up in a small farming town with a widowed father with a failing farm equipment business, there was never any question that she could attend college, despite her amazing and notices that the way things have always been done is sloppy and inefficient Worse, when she tries to bring mistakes to the attention of her superiors, she s treated with contempt and told not to make waves It s no wonder that The Talented Miss Farwell soon begins to take advantage of the lack of oversight and the slap dash ways of the office to create a little secret slush fund of money that no one misses. With an elderly, ailing father, a family business to keep afloat, no time for dating, and a job where she s unappreciated, is it any wonder she needs a hobby This soon manifests itself in a newly discovered love of art Soon Becky is attending art auctions and using her secret account to buy paintings, which she then re sells at a profit For a while, she repays the money she borrows but soon her addiction leads her to purchaseexpensive pieces.Once she grows tired of the nearby art scene in Chicago, she decides to head to where the real action is New York City Among her artsy friends, she s Reba sophisticated, always expensively dressed, and knowledgeable about all aspects of the art business To the people of Pierson, she s Becky dependable, boring, and highly efficient at her job She s known for being able to magically find money when the town needs something repaired At the same time, due to the poor economy, the town is in a financial hole not helped by Becky s skimming How long until her Activity as she calls her new venture is discovered I enjoyed reading about how Becky gotandreckless with her embezzling and the lengths she had to go to in order to cover up her deception The element of danger was alluring, as was the opportunity to escape her drab daily life to be a high flyer in the art world Her uncanny eye for spotting valuable bargains should have enabled her to keep both her Activity and the town of Pierson afloat, but her need to continually chase the next great artwork meant she could never be satisfied I received an Advance Reader s Edition The plot of this book swept me up into a roiling current of propulsive momentum, nail biting moments of tension, and the overarching question will she be able to pull it all off Becky is tenacious, brazen I liked her immediately Although her Activity embezzling, to be blunt falls short of selfless or even, well, legal, she executes all of her schemes, from saving her father s failing business to her shady and glamorous art world dealings, with such determination and vivacity that you can t help but be impressed Little Becky Farwell, local girl made good For now.The pace of the plot was my favorite part of this story because I simply couldn t put the book down I had to know what was coming next I enjoyed the descriptive, yet offhand references to art and fashion that fleshed out theconceptual side of Becky s double life, that of lofty penthouses filled with priceless art, artists themselves tossed to the wolves in extravagant parties that lasted till dawn The fashion in particular I thought was a clever plot device to show Becky s passage through time and ascension up the social ladder she begins the book wearing green eyeshadow following advice from a magazine, but as an adult sits first row at shows for McQueen and Rei Kawakubo. The consistency, too, of Becky s cutthroat desire for opulence, art, money was an interesting measuring stick for the events of the book Although she herself admits there are times when she could have, should have, bailed out of the whole scheme while she was ahead, both she and her reader are waiting to see how far she ll push it and how much she ll get away with
